The End-to-End Principle and Application Design

The end-to-end principle suggests that functions placed at low levels of a system may be redundant or incomplete when compared with the cost of providing them at a higher level. This paper discusses how this principle can be applied when designing application-level protocols and argues that the application level is the correct place to solve certain problems, even if this duplicates functionality found at lower levels.
